Dual Standards Compliance Operations Guide
Benchmarking national standards and international composite material standards · Quasi-static uniform loading · Multi-scenario universal detection
Preface
In the context of globalized trade and technical cooperation, glass fiber and its composite products often need to meet both domestic and international dual standards.GB/T 1447-2023 is the core standard for tensile property testing of fiber-reinforced plastics in my country, and ASTMD3039/D3039M is the most widely used tensile testing standard for polymer matrix composites in the world.
This article systematically compares the similarities and differences between the two major standards in sample preparation, test parameters, data processing, etc., and provides a set of standardized operating procedures that can meet the requirements of both sets of standards at the same time, helping testing institutions, R&D laboratories, and production enterprise quality inspection departments to achieve "one test, double standard compliance."
As the core equipment for carrying out the above-mentioned tests, the glass fiber tensile testing machine needs to have high-precision force value control, stable low-speed loading capability, and a clamping system adapted to a variety of sample specifications. This article takes practical operation as the main line and explains the technical points and quality control requirements of each link one by one.
1. Preparation before experiment
1.1 Confirmation of environmental conditions
The test should be conducted under standard environmental conditions, and the laboratory environmental parameters need to be confirmed before the test:
parameters | Standard requirements | Remarks |
temperature | 23℃±5℃ | GB/T 1447 regulations |
relative humidity | 50%±10% | Avoid moisture absorption affecting performance |
Status adjustment time | ≥ 24 hours | The specimen is placed in a standard environment |
Vibration interference | No obvious vibration | Keep away from punches, fans and other equipment |
1.2 Preparation of equipment and tools
·Glass fiber tensile testing machine: The range should be selected so that the expected maximum force value is within the range of 20% to 80% of the full scale.
·Wedge-shaped tensile clamp: adapted to the thickness of the glass fiber sample, and the clamping surface uses fine teeth or rubber pads to avoid pinching the sample.
·Extensometer: Gauge length 50mm (GB/T 1447) or 150mm (ASTMD3039), accuracy not less than level 1
·Measuring tools: digital vernier caliper (accuracy 0.01mm) or micrometer (accuracy 0.001mm)
·Auxiliary tools: specimen reinforcement sheets (tabs), adhesive, sandpaper, markers, dust-free cloth
·Safety protection: protective glasses, gloves (when the specimen breaks, flying debris may occur)
1.3 Equipment startup and preheating
1.Turn on the power of the testing machine host and turn on the power switch of the control system
2.Start the computer and test software to confirm that the communication connection is normal
3.Preheat the equipment for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the force sensor and displacement sensor to reach a thermally stable state.
4.Check whether the emergency stop button and limit switch function normally
5.Observe whether the oil temperature of the hydraulic system (such as a hydraulic testing machine) is within the normal operating range
⚠Attention
·Insufficient preheating of the equipment will cause the zero point of the force value to drift and affect the accuracy of the test data.Especially high-precision sensors must be fully warmed up before testing.
2. Samples
2.1 Specimen type and size
GB/T 1447-2023 specifies two specimen types, and ASTM D3039 uses straight strip specimens with reinforced sheets. The specific dimensions are as follows:
parameters | GB/T 1447 Type I (dumbbell type) | GB/T 1447 Type II (straight type) | ASTM D3039 |
Total length of specimen L | 250 mm | ≥ 200 mm | 250 mm (minimum 229mm) |
Parallel segment length | 100mm | — | — |
End width b₁ | 25mm | 25 mm | 25 mm |
Parallel section width b | 15mm | 25 mm | 25mm |
Thickness h | 2~6 mm | 2~10mm | 1~4 mm (typical) |
Transition arc R | R60mm | — | — |
Gauge length L₀ | 50mm | 50mm | 150mm |
Enhancer | Optional | Recommended | Must use |
Selection suggestions
·For thin fiberglass sheets (thickness 2~4mm), it is recommended to use ASTM D3039 standard straight specimens with reinforced sheets, which can effectively avoid clamping end breakage
·For thicker profiles or laminates, GB/T 1447 Type II specimens can be used
2.2 Sample preparation requirements
6.Cutting direction: The length direction of the sample should be consistent with the main force direction (fiber direction) of the material, and the deviation should not exceed ±2°.
7.Processing method: Use water cutting or diamond grinding wheel cutting to avoid softening of the resin matrix caused by cutting heat
8.Edge quality: The edges of the specimen should be smooth without burrs, delamination, or cracks. The edges can be lightly polished with fine sandpaper.
9.Reinforcement sheet pasting (ASTM D3039): Reinforcement sheet size 56mm×25mm, thickness 1.5~3mm, fiber direction perpendicular to the sample (90°), epoxy glue pasting
10.Number of samples: There should be no less than 5 valid samples in each group. It is recommended to prepare 6 to 8 samples to prepare for invalid samples.
11.Number identification: Use a marker to number the non-working section of the sample to avoid marking within the gauge range.
2.3 Dimensional measurement
·Width measurement: Measure 3 points (both ends and the middle) within the gauge range, and take the arithmetic average, accurate to 0.01mm
·Thickness measurement: Measure 3 points within the gauge range and take the arithmetic average, accurate to 0.01mm
·Cross-sectional area calculation: A = b × h (width × thickness), unit mm²
·When measuring, the measuring surface of the caliper should be perpendicular to the sample surface to avoid measurement errors caused by tilt.
3. Installation and inspection of experimental fixtures
3.1 Fixture selection and installation
12.Select the appropriate wedge clamp block according to the specimen thickness and type. It is recommended to use a centering wedge clamp or a hydraulic wedge clamp.
13.Install the upper clamp on the upper beam connection seat of the testing machine and tighten the fixing bolts to ensure there is no looseness.
14.Install the lower clamp on the testing machine workbench or the lower beam connection seat
15.Adjust the coaxiality of the upper and lower clamps and use a centering rod or dial indicator for alignment.
3.2 Neutrality check
Check items | Allowable deviation | Check method |
Coaxiality of upper and lower clamping surfaces | ≤ 0.5 mm | Insert the centering rod into the upper and lower chucks and check visually or with a dial indicator. |
Clamp parallelism | ≤ 0.05 mm | Feeler gauge to check the uniformity of the gap between the clamp faces |
Cleanliness of clamping surface | No oil, no debris | Visual inspection, wipe with lint-free cloth |
Clamp wear condition | Clear tooth pattern without serious wear | Visual inspection, severe wear and need to be replaced |
3.3 Clamp clamping force setting
·Pneumatic/hydraulic wedge clamp: The clamping pressure is set to 2~4MPa (adjusted according to the thickness of the sample, and the lower value is used for thin samples)
·Manual wedge clamp: Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts on both sides evenly, the torque is about 8~12N·m
·If the clamping force is too small, the sample will slip. If the clamping force is too large, the brittle glass fiber sample will be crushed. It needs to be adjusted according to the material characteristics.
·It is recommended to use a waste sample to test the clamp before the formal test to confirm that the clamping force is appropriate.
⚠Common mistakes
·Breakage of the clamping end of the glass fiber specimen is the most common reason for invalid testing. In addition to using reinforcement sheets, you should also ensure that the clamping surface is clean, the clamping force is moderate, and the sample is fully inserted into the bottom of the clamp (clamping length ≥ 3/4 of the clamping block length).
4. Material testing status debugging
4.1 Sensor clearing
16.In the no-load state (no specimen is installed), clear the force value channel to zero.
17.Clear the displacement channel (with the current position as the zero point)
18.After installing the extensometer, clear the deformation channel
19.After clearing, observe for 30 seconds to confirm that the values of each channel are stable and without drift.
4.2 Test plan settings
Parameter item | GB/T 1447-2023 | ASTM D3039/D3039M |
Test type | Tensile test | Tensile test |
Control method | Displacement control | Displacement control |
loading rate | 1~5 mm/min (recommended 2 mm/min) | 1~2 mm/min (recommended 1.27 mm/min) |
Gauge length | 50 mm | 150mm |
Sampling frequency | ≥ 20 Hz | ≥ 5 Hz (20 Hz recommended) |
shutdown conditions | Automatic shutdown when fracture occurs/force value drops by 80% | Automatic shutdown when fracture occurs/force value drops by 50% |
force range | 1.2 to 2 times the expected maximum force | Tongzuo |
4.3 Extensometer installation
20.Adjust the extensometer gauge length to the standard required value (50mm or 150mm)
21.Use a marker pen to mark the endpoint of the gauge length at the specimen gauge length.
22.Align the two edges of the extensometer with the marking line and secure it gently with a rubber band or spring.
23.Moderate pre-tightening force: it can ensure that the knife edge does not slip and does not crush the sample surface.
24.After installation, gently pull the extensometer to confirm that the deformation reading changes normally and then return to zero.
Operation skills
·For brittle glass fiber materials, it is recommended to remove the extensometer when the sample reaches about 50% of the tensile strength to avoid damage to the extensometer when the sample breaks. After removal, the test continues to be completed with displacement control.
5. Core operating steps of the testing machine
5.1 Sample clamping
25.Insert the upper end of the sample into the upper clamp, ensuring that the center line of the sample coincides with the center line of the clamp and that the clamping length is sufficient
26.Gently clamp the upper clamp (press the foot switch for pneumatic clamps and pre-tighten the bolts for manual clamps)
27.Manually lower the lower beam so that the lower end of the specimen naturally enters the lower fixture. It is prohibited to forcefully pull the specimen against the hole.
28.Clamp the lower clamp and confirm that the sample is vertical and not skewed
29.Observing the force value shows that if the force value after clamping exceeds 2% of the expected maximum force, it indicates that there is a pre-tightening force and the clamp should be loosened and reinstalled.
5.2 Software operation process
30.Open the test software and select the corresponding test standard scheme (GB/T 1447 or ASTM D3039)
31.Click "New Test" and enter sample information: number, width, thickness, cross-sectional area, gauge length
32.Confirm test parameters: loading rate, sampling frequency, shutdown conditions
33.Click the "Clear" button to clear the force value, displacement, and deformation channels.
34.Click the "Start Test" button, and the testing machine will automatically load at the set rate.
35.Observe the stress-strain curve and force value changes in real time during the test
36.After the sample breaks, the testing machine automatically stops and click "Save" to record the test data.
37.Fill in the post-test parameters (such as gauge length after break, break position) and complete the sample record
38.Click "Return" to return the beam to its initial position and replace the next sample.

6. Test start-up and process monitoring
6.1 Normal curve characteristics
·Initial segment: The curve rises smoothly from the origin, with no obvious steps or jumps (indicating no slipping)
·Elastic segment: The stress-strain relationship is linear, and the slope is the elastic modulus.
·Breaking point: After reaching the maximum stress, it decreases rapidly and the sample undergoes brittle fracture.
·The curve is smooth without jagged edges and no obvious "force plateau" (unless the material yields significantly)
6.2 Identification and processing of abnormal phenomena
abnormal phenomena | Possible reasons | Treatment method |
The initial section of the curve has jagged fluctuations | The specimen is slipping/there is oil on the clamping surface | Clean the clamping surface, increase the clamping force, and use reinforcement sheets |
The slope of the curve is too small (the modulus is too low) | Extensometer slipping/poor alignment | Reinstall the extensometer and check the fixture coaxiality |
Broken clamping end (invalid test) | Stress concentration/excessive clamping force | Use reinforcement sheets to reduce the clamping force and check the clamping surface |
The curve has a double slope | Specimen eccentricity/grip misalignment | Re-align the fixture to ensure that the specimen is clamped vertically |
The force value suddenly returns to zero but the sample is not broken | Sensor overload/loose wiring | Check the sensor range and tighten the wiring |
Elongation at break is abnormally large | Extensometer not clamped/wrong gauge length | Check extensometer installation and confirm gauge length setting |
6.3 Key points of security monitoring
·During the test, the operator should stand in a safe position on the side of the testing machine and is not allowed to face the sample directly.
·Close the protective door (if any) to prevent specimen breakage and debris from flying.
·Wear protective glasses
·Pay close attention to changes in force value. If there is abnormal noise or severe vibration, press the emergency stop button immediately.
·Pay attention to changes in oil temperature of the hydraulic testing machine. If it exceeds 60°C, it should be shut down for cooling.
7. End of test and data storage
7.1 Data calculation formula
(1) Tensile strength σ_t
σ_t = F_max/A
F_max — maximum test force (N); A — original cross-sectional area of the specimen (mm²); σ_t unit is MPa (N/mm²)
(2) Elastic modulus E
E = (σ₂ - σ₁) / (ε₂ - ε₁)
σ₁, σ₂ — the stress values (MPa) at two points on the linear segment of the stress-strain curve; ε₁, ε₂ — the corresponding strain values; usually ε₁=0.001, ε₂=0.003 (ASTMD3039)
(3) Elongation at break ε_t
ε_t = (L_u - L₀) / L₀ × 100%
L_u — gauge length after fracture (mm); L₀ — original gauge length (mm)
(4) Group average and dispersion coefficient
X̄ = (ΣX_i) / n CV = (S / X̄) × 100%
X̄ — arithmetic mean; S — standard deviation; n — effective number of samples; CV — coefficient of variation, usually required to be ≤ 7%
7.2 Result rounding rules
Performance parameters | Rounding accuracy | Basis |
tensile strength | 3 significant figures | GB/T 1447/ASTM D3039 |
elastic modulus | 3 significant figures (or 0.1 GPa) | GB/T 1447 |
Elongation at break | 1 decimal place (%) | GB/T 1447 |
standard deviation | Same accuracy as corresponding parameters | — |
7.3 Determination of test invalidity
·The specimen breaks within the clamping end (within the reinforcing piece)
·The sample slipped obviously during the test.
·The sample has obvious manufacturing defects or processing damage
·Equipment failure or operational errors lead to data anomalies
·Data deviate from the group mean by more than 2 standard deviations (by Grubbs test)
7.4 Data storage and reporting
39.After each set of experiments is completed, the original data is saved in the software-specific format and Excel/CSV format.
40.Export PDF test report. The report should include: sample information, test conditions, data of each sample, average value, standard deviation, stress-strain curve graph
41.The original data is backed up to the server or external storage, and the retention period is no less than 5 years.
42.Fracture specimens should be retained and numbered, at least until the report review is completed.
8. Safety precautions
⚠Safe operating procedures
·Operators must be trained and familiar with the performance of the equipment before they can operate independently
·Before the test, check whether the emergency stop button and limit protection device are sensitive and reliable
·When clamping the specimen, it must be done in a stopped state. It is forbidden to adjust the specimen by hand when the crossbeam is moving.
·During the test, the protective door must be closed and personnel should stand in the side safety area.
·When the fiberglass sample breaks, sharp debris may fly, so protective glasses must be worn.
·It is prohibited to stay near the high-pressure pipeline of the hydraulic testing machine for a long time
·If any abnormalities such as abnormal noise, odor, or oil leakage are detected during the operation of the equipment, immediately press the emergency stop and report for repair.
·After the test, clean up the sample debris on the work surface and keep the equipment clean
